MSF is a non-governmental humanitarian organization, created in France in 1971, under the status of a non-profit association. The Swiss section was created in 1981. Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1999, MSF’s mission is to provide humanitarian medical aid to any affected population without distinction of ethnicity, gender, religion, philosophy or political opinion.

The Swiss section of Médecins Sans Frontières has opened programs in the Far North – Mora regions for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition in children under 5 years old since 2015. And a program for the treatment of SURGERY at the Mora district hospital.

General objective:

Provides obstetric care to pregnant women and their babies, performs follow-up before, during and after childbirth, in accordance with MSF obstetric and reproductive health protocols, universal hygiene and newborn care standards, and under the supervision of a specialist doctor, in order to ensure their health conditions and avoid post-delivery complications.

Main responsibilities (non-exhaustive)
 Ensure the establishment and continuity of antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetric care (BEMONC[1] and CEMONC[2]), neonatal abortion service, management of victims of sexual violence, reproductive tract infections and fistula care in accordance with the MSF reproductive core set of activities, and consolidate the implementation of standardized protocols.
 Where PMTCT is implemented, ensure the implementation of the PMTCT protocol during delivery and PNC consultations (pre-counselling, testing and post-counselling)


 Collaborate with the doctor and/or nurse for the management of cases of sexual violence Ensure that hygiene and sterilization criteria (including universal precautions) are respected in accordance with MSF specifications. Perform
 minor maintenance and cleaning of medical equipment according to the instructions in the user manual and protocols. Inform the medical supervisor in the event of a malfunction of a medical device
 Ensure a regular and continuous supply of medicines and equipment necessary for maternity activities (including monitoring/consumption control/placing orders)
 Appropriate follow-up of all newborns from delivery to discharge, informing mothers and parents about the importance of breastfeeding, vaccination and
 possible complications resulting from harmful traditional practices.
 Ensure that patients’ rights to privacy and confidentiality are respected. Monitor that administrative procedures for admissions and hospitalizations comply with MSF protocols, and also verify that patients are properly informed and receive the necessary documents (birth certificate, vaccination card, etc.).
 Participate in the organization of the service in collaboration with other midwives and the maternity supervisor. Ensure the transfer of relevant information to the team replacing you (in particular identification of cases at risk). In accordance with current MSF protocols, perform normal deliveries independently, manage obstetric emergencies; identify cases requiring referral and refer them in time, clean the newborn, perform and record the first neonatal medical acts (cutting and cleaning the umbilical cord, vaccination, etc.), detect possible anomalies/infections in the newborn and report them to the doctor, in order to ensure effective interventions. Monitors the use of drugs, obstetric facilities and equipment, in order to ensure according to the number of patients and prescriptions, rational use, as well as pharmacy stock levels are permanently updated, kept in good conditions and at the minimum level of security.


 [1] BEMONC = basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care = administration of antibiotics, oxytocics, anticonvulsants, manual removal of the placenta, removal of retained products following abortion, assisted vaginal delivery, preferably with a vacuum extractor and neonatal care, including neonatal resuscitation. [2] CEMONC = comprehensive obstetric and neonatal care = the whole of BEMONC Plus; surgery (cesarean, hysterectomy, laparotomy), safe blood transfusion, and care of sick and low birth weight newborns
SELECTION CRITERIA
Midwifery diploma recognized by the country
 Professional experience of at least 2 years as a midwife Adherence to MSF principles and protocols Fluency
 in French, knowledge of local languages would be an asset
