Summary of Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Head of Mission (HOM) and the Butler, the incumbent is responsible for preparing all culinary aspects of Canada’s representation abroad, including assisting in determining appropriate Canadian and local dishes, ensuring kitchen hygiene, and preparing these dishes for official and unofficial functions (including, but not limited to, official and informal lunches and dinners, cocktail receptions, and receptions). The incumbent is also responsible for inventory, budgeting, and procurement of food for official and unofficial events.

 

Area of selection:

This position is open to candidates who are eligible to reside and work in Cameroon, as well as to all employees of the High Commission of Canada in Cameroon in a permanent or temporary position, including emergency employees, who meet all the essential requirements stated below and whose applications are received by the closing date.

Education:

Candidates must meet the education requirement and will be required to provide proof of completion.  

 

Diploma in Culinary Arts, Restaurant or Food and Beverage from a government-recognized institute/college/university or an acceptable combination* of education, training and relevant experience.

*An acceptable combination of education and relevant experience is considered a total of three (3) years or more.
 

Language Profile:

Fluency in English or French (reading, writing and speaking)
 

Experience:

At least two (2) years of recent experience (within the last five (5) years) as a sous chef or chef in a restaurant, hotel, diplomatic mission/official residence or similar service environment in the food and beverage industry.
Experience in preparing meals for events (25 guests or more), including meal planning, product sourcing and hiring additional kitchen/serving staff; Experience in preparing a wide variety of dishes, e.g., hors d’oeuvres, appetizers, main courses, pastries, and desserts; Experience in international cuisine (e.g., Canadian, Central African, European, or Asian) and Cameroonian. Experience in kitchen management – effective hygiene, budgeting, staff supervision. RATED REQUIREMENTS Rated requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are related to knowledge, abilities, and skills. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, oral interview (pre-recorded/live online or in-person), role play, practical test, presentation, and/or psychometric test. Knowledge: Knowledge of general culinary procedures and practices; Knowledge of hygiene and cleanliness procedures, food quality and safety; Knowledge of reliable local service providers in the food industry. Skills: Effective interactive communication in French or English (oral and written); Professional integrity; Attention to detail; Initiative; Flexibility and adaptability. Abilities: Ability to coordinate conflicting priorities within tight deadlines, organize time and work efficiently; Ability to prepare menus for different types of events,to establish quotes and source from quality suppliers; Ability to work in a team.

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who meet asset qualifications. Candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet these qualifications, as applicable.

Experience in preparing meals for large events with 45 or more guests, including meal planning, sourcing fresh produce, and recruiting additional kitchen and service staff; Understanding and/or ability to communicate in the second official language; Experience working in an embassy or official residence; Experience leading a culinary team. Operational Requirements: Availability and willingness to work overtime, regularly in the evenings or weekends, as required. Overtime will only be paid after completing the required 45 hours of weekly work; Ability to lift cartons weighing up to 20 kg. Conditions of Employment: Conditions of Employment must be met or complied with prior to appointment to a particular position and must be maintained throughout the duration of the contract by the incumbent. – Valid Work Authorization: Ability to obtain and maintain a valid work permit covering the entire period of employment. – Security Check: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal background check and a Government of Canada credit check covering the entire period of employment. How to Apply You must submit your application using the “Apply Online” feature.
