International students significantly contribute to the social, cultural, and economic landscape of Canada. To uphold the integrity of the International Student Program while safeguarding students from fraudulent activities and financial instability, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has implemented recent reforms.
Recently, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the conclusion of the temporary policy permitting students to work beyond 20 hours per week off campus, effective April 30, 2024, with no extension. Subsequently, this autumn, adjustments will be made to permit students to work off campus for up to 24 hours per week.
The fundamental purpose of students arriving in Canada is for educational pursuits. Thus, permitting a maximum of 24 hours of off-campus work per week ensures their primary focus remains on academic endeavors, with the option of employment if necessary.
During scheduled academic breaks in the upcoming summer session, students may continue working without hour limitations. This decision was informed by considerations of student welfare, international policies, and research findings indicating adverse effects on academic performance with increased work hours.
Furthermore, ongoing efforts include the development of the Recognized Institutions Framework, aimed at recognizing post-secondary institutions that uphold rigorous standards in selecting, supporting, and retaining international students. These endeavors underscore our commitment to safeguarding international students from financial vulnerabilities and preserving the integrity of the International Student Program. Further details will be communicated in due course.
