SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The mission is seeking to fill a Sous Chef position for the Head of Mission’s program. The incumbent prepares food for formal and informal receptions and is responsible for kitchen hygiene, inventory, budgeting, and supplies. The successful candidate may be required to supervise and contribute to the housekeeping and cleaning of the official residence, and, as needed, ensure the quality of services provided by staff during events.

 

SELECTION AREA

This selection process is open to all candidates who have the right to reside and work in Cameroon, including Embassy employees, spouses of Canadian employees, and their dependent children aged 16 and over, who meet all essential qualifications and whose applications are received before the closing date.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education

This position requires:

Diploma in Culinary Arts, Hospitality, or Food and Beverage from a government-recognized institute/college/university or an acceptable combination* of education, training, and relevant experience.
*An acceptable combination of education and relevant experience is considered to be three (3) years or more.

Languages:

The following language requirements are required for this position. Applicants will be formally assessed or asked to provide proof of certification of these levels.

Advanced proficiency (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in English OR advanced proficiency (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in French.
Experience:

The following experience is required to perform the responsibilities of this position.

Two (2) years of cumulative experience (within the last five (5) years) as a Chef or Sous Chef in a restaurant, hotel, diplomatic mission/official residence, or similar service environment in the food and beverage industry.
Experience in preparing meals for events (for a minimum of 10 guests), including meal planning, sourcing products, and recruiting additional kitchen/service staff.
Experience preparing a wide variety of dishes, such as appetizers, hors d’oeuvres, main courses, pastries, and desserts.
Experience with international (e.g., Canadian, Central African, European, or Asian) and Cameroonian cuisine.
Experience in kitchen management – ​​effective hygiene and budgeting.
Skills:

All skills* will be assessed and must be met prior to employment.

Knowledge of general culinary procedures and practices.
Knowledge of hygiene and cleanliness procedures, food quality, and food safety.
Knowledge of reliable local food service providers.
Ability to prepare menus for different types of events, create quotes, and source from quality suppliers.
Organization and coordination skills.

Initiative and action-oriented.
Written communication.
Oral interaction.
Working with others and horizontal leadership.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

Preference may be given to candidates who possess the following asset qualifications. Candidates must clearly demonstrate how these qualifications have been met, if applicable. 

Experience in preparing meals for large events of 45 or more guests, including meal planning, sourcing fresh produce, and recruiting additional kitchen and service staff.
Understanding and/or ability to communicate in the second official language.
Professional experience in an embassy or official residence.
Experience managing a culinary team.
Experience in a head chef role.
 

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Operational requirements are assessed on a “meet/not meet” basis and may help determine the right person for the position.

Hours of Work: The normal working hours for this position are in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment for locally recruited employees and are 45 hours per week.
Overtime: The employee may be required to work overtime occasionally and sometimes with short notice.
Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 20 kg.
 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Conditions of employment must be met or respected prior to appointment to the position. These conditions must be maintained throughout the period of employment.

Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and maintain a valid work authorization covering the period of employment.
Security clearance: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security clearance) that includes a criminal and credit background check by the Government of Canada.
